Given the massive cast, audiences can also expect cameos and larger roles from more people from Harry's past. Will we catch up with Luna and Neville (the movie OTP that belonged in the books)? How about Draco or the rest of the Weasleys? How many of Harry's old professors are still wandering Hogwarts and the Wizarding World? Could a costume designer outfit a human actor as a centaur?
When Stars are Scattered by Victoria JamiesonListening Time: 3.5 hoursYou might think a graphic novel is really best enjoyed when you can see the . . . you know, graphics. But the audio version of this stunning book is out to prove you wrong with a full-cast narration that brings this true story of a young boy living in a refuge camp in Kenya, caring for his non-verbal younger brother and trying to attend school to life in the most stunning way. In fact, people who have listened to this audiobook tell me they feel sorry for people who read it on paper instead of getting to experience the audio version. This is a terrific one for both children (probably about 8+) and adults!
Look Both Ways by Jason ReynoldsListening Time: 4 hoursYou never know what might happen on the walk home from school. In this full cast audio production, superstar author Jason Reynolds tells ten tales (one per block) about ten different walks home that all intertwine in funny and touching ways.
This Audible Plus title is performed as a 1930s radio drama, with a full cast and original music. The Flamingo Sisters live with their evil Uncle Freidrich, but when their pilot parents go missing over the ocean, the three girls run away to join the flying circus. Until they discover a map that might lead them a family fortune. Assuming they can outsmart their uncle who also wants the treasure!
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie BarrowsListening Time: 8 hoursThis epistolary novel (all written in letters) is a delightful WWII novel and the full cast really brings it to life because all of the characters are SUCH big parts of the story! (Full review here)
All time favorite full cast version is the Chronicles of Narnia from Focus on the Family Radio Theatre. Narrated by Paul Scofield (Best actor academy award winner), it is brilliant. I have been listening since I was a kid.
If you've ever listened to a podcast, taken public transportation, or watched a commercial, you've probably heard about Audible(Opens in a new tab). Most audiobooks are narrated by one person reading a book to you, but most people don't know that Audible also offers full cast recordings. Usually this means that in addition to a narrator, there are other voice actors reading for each character. The result is a fully dramatized performance that feels less like a bedtime story and more like a movie playing out in your head.
We've collected some of our favorite full cast recordings available on Audible right now. If you're not already a member, clicking this link(Opens in a new tab) will get you a 30-day trial with two free books to try it out. Get ready for a fully immersive story experience.
Years before the critically-acclaimed Starz series started filming, Neil Gaiman celebrated the 10th anniversary of his epic novel American Gods by releasing a new, longer, slightly different version based on his unedited manuscript. Basically a director's cut. HarperAudio also released an audiobook of this version that continues to be the gold standard of full cast recordings. Whether or not you watch the Starz series, listening to the (almost 20-hour long) cast recording is a unique and worthwhile feat.
If you've only watched the Emmy-winning Hulu series, listening to Margaret Atwood's modern classic is an entirely different experience. The novel is presented almost entirely in the first person from the point of view of Offred, played by Elisabeth Moss in the series. While the majority of the novel is narrated (excellently) by Clare Danes alone, the epilogue is performed by a full cast. No spoilers, but this Audible-exclusive special edition answers questions that the original did not.
Yet another best-selling book that's been adapted into a critically-acclaimed series, revisiting A Series of Unfortunate Events is always a good time (with one exception, but we don't have to talk about the movie, right?) The audiobooks, narrated by the one-and-only Tim Curry, have always been excellent. In the full cast recording, Curry is joined by some of the stars of the movie (okay, I guess we have to talk about it) Jude Law, Meryl Streep and Jim Carrey. The addition of music and sound effects creates a fully immersive experience. Unfortunately the rest of the books in the series don't have full cast recordings available, but with the success of the Netflix series there's still hope.
The Golden Compass is another childhood classic that holds up well into adulthood. The first book of the fantasy adventure series, His Dark Materials, follows a young girl named Lyra who is caught up in a universe-spanning battle between the forces of dark and light, wields a compass that reads truth, and is accompanied by a shape-shifting daemon. The full cast recording brings life and weight to this wild and epic story.
One of the scariest Sherlock Holmes stories, The Hound of the Baskervilles is a classic for a reason. The apparently supernatural monster that turns out to be a greedy human inspired countless Scooby Doo villains. This recording by Canadian audio horror collective Bleak December enlists Sir Derek Jacobi as the gruff detective. With a full cast, score, and sound effects, this adaptation is much closer to the original than the BBC series.
The magic of the forecast maps is that they compile more than 25 years of data on when migrants are on the move and mash it up with meteorological data including wind speed, direction, barometric pressure, and temperature. You no longer have to have a PhD in migration ecology to use all these variables: just look for the brightest colors on the maps to know when to go.
